Updated Wednesday December 2, 2015 by Stanley Park.

A family fishing event hosted
by the Optimist Club of Stanley Park.

The Optimist Club of Stanley Park is committed to assisting the youth of the Stanley Park community (and Kitchener-Waterloo) through various programs and projects, of which, the Bass Derby is one.

This fun filled Live Release Derby is held on the Grand River with the Derby headquarters and measuring station at Bingeman Park in Kitchener. Only Smallmouth Bass caught in the Grand River are eligible and must be brought in alive. Proceeds from the Derby are ear-marked for enhancement to public access on the Grand River.

Proceeds from the derby are used to maintain and develop the Stanley Park Optimist Natural Area located along the J.A. Pollock Family Trailway of the Walter Bean Grand River Trail in Kitchener. This 20 acre site, on the west side of the river by highway #7, includes 2 ponds for fish reproduction, a marsh area, parking and a canoe launch as well as walking and biking trails. Future proceeds are committed to maintain and develop this area as a key public access point to the Grand River, fish spawning area and wildlife habitat.

The 2016 Grand River Bass Derby is being held on Saturday July 9 and Sunday July 10. You can pre-register early at Natural Sports.

The event is headquartered at Bingeman Park with closing ceremonies held there on the Sunday afternoon of the Derby weekend.

1st place in the OPEN Division: Allan Crowe, $2,000 cash for his 20 1/8" catch.
